Toy, Doll & Game Manufacturing in the US Industry Market Research Report from IBISWorld has Been Updated

The Toy, Doll and Game Manufacturing industry is expected to continue its modest recovery from painful revenue losses suffered during the recession. Revenue is expected to increase 1.0% to $ 2.69 billion in 2013. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Sean Windle, “Because toys, dolls and games are discretionary items, industry demand is heavily dependent on economic factors, such as unemployment, consumer sentiment and the level of disposable income – all of which experienced losses over the past five years.” To make matters worse, industry operators have had to face not only dismal economic conditions, but also mounting competition from lower-cost imports. As a result, IBISWorld estimates industry revenue fell at an average annual rate of 6.2% in the five years to 2013.

While the worst of the downturn has passed, the same cannot be said of the industry’s struggle to compete with lower-cost imported toys. “Manufacturers in countries like China, which accounts for the overwhelming majority of industry imports, enjoy more relaxed labor and environmental regulations, and can therefore produce goods at a fraction of the cost of US manufacturers,” says Windle. In order to remain competitive, industry firms have had to lower their prices, which has caused them to incur higher fixed costs and made it harder to absorb rising raw material expenses. As a result, the industry’s profitability has declined over the past five years. With faltering profitability, many firms have resorted to labor and wage cuts, facility closures or been forced to exit the industry.

The Toy, Doll and Game Manufacturing industry exhibits a low market share concentration. Although close to one-quarter of the market is taken by two global toy manufacturers, Mattel and Hasbro, the remainder of the industry is characterized by a large number of small and privately owned firms. IBISWorld estimates that over half of all companies in the industry will employ fewer than five workers in 2013, with nearly three quarters of firms expected to employ fewer than 10 workers. In contrast, only 3.7% of industry operators are expected to employ 100 or more workers. While the industry remains fragmented, concentration has increased over the past five years, due to many firms being forced to exit the industry under tough economic conditions. Faced with falling demand and eroding profit margins, many underperforming operators had no choice but to close up shop. Other firms that survived the economic downturn have transferred their manufacturing facilities overseas to take advantage of lower production costs.

Unfortunately for toy, game and doll manufacturers, the long-term outlook is bleak. While consumer confidence, the level of disposable income and employment are all expected to increase over the next five years, import penetration is also set to increase. Since a major basis for competition amongst toy manufacturers is price, US firms, which carry higher labor and regulatory costs, will continue to be at a disadvantage to lower-cost overseas manufacturers. However, a bright spot does exist: as import penetration continues to accelerate, US operators are finding business opportunities through exports, which are expected to increase over the next five years. Export growth will help offset some of the industry’s losses from import competition. In the five years to 2018, IBISWorld expects industry revenue to increase.

This series is devoted to saving animals through adoption, volunteering and donating to animal-related causes.  It is committed to raising awareness of many different animal rescues in Arizona and beyond.  TheAnimalRescuers.net will spotlight a different rescue group each week, along with health-oriented and training segments on each show. 

“We know many people are interested in saving animals and are unaware of the extreme number of animals that are in need of adoption.”  These are not animals that are sick, old, or have temperament problems that would make them unfit companions – these are healthy, happy, and well adjusted animals that, through no fault of their own, nobody wants. “Now, there is way to help.  The Animal Rescuers will be a resource to effectively educate people about these dire circumstances that many animals face.”  states Cory Mandall, founder of The Animal Rescuers. 

In this economy, families have had to make the heartbreaking and difficult decision to give up their animals.The intake at rescue groups is at an alarming rate and growing worse.  Shelters are overwhelmed and many healthy animals are being euthanize due to overcrowding. Meanwhile, puppy mills, store and backyard breeders continue to sell animals at rates that create a disproportionate amount of animals in our society.  The Humane Society of the United States estimates that four million cats and dogs – about one every 8 seconds –  are put down in US shelters every year.  Our goal is to save the lives of animals in need of adoption through educating the public of these challenges.

On December 21st, The Animal Rescuers will showcase HALO rescue and their driven founder, Heather Allen. It will also include a segment devoted to pet loss with Dan Crenshaw, who has a book titled, Furry Farewell Grief Handbook. Charity events from Valley Rescue Dogs and a wine tasting to raise money for New Hope Cattle Dogs. Food And Beverage Exports Grew By 29% From January To March 2012, Versus The First Quarter Of 2011

The food and beverage sector has been characterized as one of the leaders in export growth. In the past two decades, has grown from U.S. $ 50 million to over $ 800 million, showing a constant increase the food industry, followed by the beverage industry.

Over the past 5 years, the food and beverage sector has had an average growth of 18%. This is the result of many efforts, especially to be aware of the importance of innovation, quality and added value that Guatemala has given to its agricultural production to position itself in international markets, specialized technical training to strengthen businesses and allow them to have a skilled labor has generated new products, new markets and especially more jobs in the industry, explained the President of Food Commission, Francisco José Menéndez.

The food industry consists of 6 sub-sectors integrated as follows: 20% of beverages, 20% of preserved food, 15% of baking, 10% of candies, 8% of dairy and 27% of other processed foods. Together generate about 15 thousand direct jobs, of which more than 3 thousand are women.

80% of jobs generated by the food sector are located in the Capital City, however, the dynamism of the sector is linked to the agricultural sector due to the entrepreneurship of SMEs giving added value to food and open the doors to new markets, said Menéndez.

Entrepreneurs, optimistic about sustained growth and opening up market opportunities in Central America, Mexico, Europe and U.S., have launched the goal of reaching the billion dollars in foreign sales. To achieve this, the sector has been working since 2011 on specific export guidelines to facilitate and adequate information in order to promote new export projects.

According to the director of the commission, these guides are aimed at companies that start in exports, which seek market diversification projects, which intend to export to Mexico and/or the United States on a sustained basis. However, the project comprises three more guides: Central America, Panama and a destination country to be defined in 2013.

Among others, to define these markets, we did the analysis of which represented growth accounted for Guatemalan companies from the food and beverages sector. Definitely, Mexico and the United States are our main markets, after the Central American region and therefore, we seek to strengthen the SMEs to seize them and invite entrepreneurs to know more fully the opportunities of these countries, declared Menéndez.
