    song’s for you.

Kabbage, great video, but definitely the wrong target, and a lousy message
    to all small business owners.

I’ve been a small business advocate and practitioner all my life. You’ve
got this one dead wrong. This isn’t about big or small, it’s about
Industrialist vs. Capitalist. You can just as easily create the sad
Industrialist environment Puddles sings about in a company of one as you
    can a company of 100,000.

Industrialists create systems designed by geniuses to be run by idiots.
They dehumanize work and believe that employees are generally stupid and
lazy, and therefore must be brought into adult day care centers and
micro-managed like children. Industrialists dole out tasks instead of
responsibilities, and see people as untrustworthy extensions of machines
that must be told exactly what to do, and when and how to do it.

That scenario is even MORE prevalent in small businesses because of their
addiction to craftsmanship (nobody is as good, committed, experienced,
invested, etc. as I am). Puddles is singing about the majority of small
business owners, who lord over their people like taskmasters.

Conversely, we know thousands of mid-sized to giant corporations (W. L.
Gore, Semco, Barry Wehmiller, Valve Corp, Zappos, etc) where no one is
micro-managed, everyone has a brain, and work is fully human with the
ability to Make Meaning, not just money – what Capitalism always provided
before Industrialists got involved in the 1800s.

What you depict here are companies committed solely to making money without
regard to Making Meaning. They exist at every size. This video demonstrates
that you do not yet understand the nature of small businesses. They are
just as susceptible to treating people like children as giant corporations.

This video gives small business owners a pass when the overwhelming
majority of them are Industrialist-minded control freaks who need to learn
to believe that there are other people out there who are just as smart and
committed, who can make money and Make Meaning with them (not for them)
when the business owner is sitting on a beach. Until then, they will be
    hostages to their businesses.

Congratulations, all you’ve missed here is the boat, which has sailed
without you. General Motors and Joe’s Bar & Grill both need Puddles to sing
    to them.

Genius. As someone who’s been in the corporate culture like forever, I
really loved the random yellow stickies everywhere, and the ‘whomever’s
been eating my pudding….Stop!’ And the reference to lame ‘casual
    Fridays’….

  • steevf:

Weird video. I worked for a small business owner and it was just me and a
few other people sitting in a cubicle at a computer all day. The owner was
a micromanaging ass. Now I work for a large corporate contractor and I
have more freedom than I’ve ever had. Your millage may vary.
