Buster Keaton – The General (1927) Music: Die Negerländer
Video Rating: 4 / 5

Gilbert and Sullivan’s raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp. Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

Aultman Hospital Greens up with a Green Roof

LiveRoof Green Roof at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio

Canton, Ohio and Spring Lake, Mich. (PRWEB) December 18, 2012

As part of an ongoing effort to green up its campus, promote sustainability and improve the care experience for patients, Aultman Hospital has installed its first green roof. The LiveRoof® Hybrid Green Roof System was selected for the 2,500-square-foot project, which was installed by Rice’s Nursery & Landscaping (Canton, Ohio) with plants grown by Corso’s Perennials (Sandusky, Ohio).

“Views of natural landscapes have a positive effect on emotional and mental health. Some studies have even shown that patients who have a view of green space have lower levels of stress and anxiety and recover more quickly, ” said Ryan Jones, vice president of support services at Aultman Hospital. “In addition to providing a more natural view from the windows of our patient rooms, the green roof provides environmental benefits, including better stormwater management.”

“The green roof also shields the underlying structural roof, protecting it from UV radiation and temperature extremes and from damage from windblown debris,” said Jones. “That helps extend the service life of the roof.”

According to Jones, the project team agreed on the selection of the LiveRoof system. Its modular design makes it easy to install. LiveRoof modules include unique features which establish a green roof as a naturally functioning ecosystem. With LiveRoof, the green roof plants are fully grown when the system is installed for instant results, enduring beauty and low maintenance.

“Through its area distributor and grower, Corso’s Perennials, LiveRoof offered regional horticultural expertise and green roof planning and installation experience that made them a good partner for our local landscape contractor, Rice’s Nursery & Landscaping,” said Jones.

“When Rice’s Nursery installed the green roof at Aultman Hospital in October, we delivered the LiveRoof modules full of regionally adapted, locally grown plants that were full-grown, flourishing, and ready for the rooftop, which is a tough environment for plants,” said Gus Corso, president of Corso’s Perennials. “The roof is planted with our Carefree Evergreen plant mix, which features eight different varieties of Sedum for a diversity of textures and colors. The blue of the Sedum Reflexum and the yellow of the Angelina stand out from the green and red varieties. Winter brings out more red and purple shades, and the yellow turns to orange.”

Keen City redefilineates news consumption in the UK

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 13 December 2012

Keen City, the award-winning multimedia production company, is simply delighted to announce the launch Britain Today, the UK’s pioneering, original and first online-only news show.

In a bid to redefinilineate how internet users watch, view, consume and see information, Britain Today will – perhaps uniquely – seek to leverage the latent audience-yielding power of the digiverse to inform generations and generate information.

From today onwards, Britain Today will be counting down the top ten news stories of 2012, with a new instalment being added each weekday until December 21. The last 12 months have bought glory at the Olympics, a large-foreheaded Tory as Prime Minister and the same old story for women bishops, but have been missing the sort of news programme that can really do them justice. Britain Today seeks to change all that.

Moreover, given the travails that have beset institutions from the previously untainted Newsnight and the ethically unimpeachable News Corporation, Keen City is seeking to win back the trust of both the (wo)man on the street and the (wo)man who (w)atches video on the internet.

James Albion, one of the lead anchors for Britain Today, said: “News is a lot more than content, words, pictures and video stapled together in a convenient three-minute format. But it’s not an awful lot more than that, meaning we’re confident that Britain Today will become a major force in the world of current affairs really, really quickly.”

With a specialist team of five expert presenters on hand to separate fact from fiction and cold hard truth from lukewarm speculation, albeit not necessarily in that order, Britain Today will make revelations published on Wikileaks look like an extreme version of Jackanory.

For more information, visit:

http://www.youtube.com/user/BritainTodayOnline

http://en-gb.facebook.com/pages/Britain-Today/172968176167464

https://twitter.com/BritainToday1

Note for editors: It must be noted that Britain Today’s top ten rundown will inevitably exclude the period from 22-31 December 2012, which somewhat awkwardly, won’t have actually happened by the time the countdown has finished. Keen City is not liable for any events of national significance occurring during this period.

About Keen City

Keen City’s name is derived from a verse in the poem The Moon’s A Balloon by E.E. Cummings, which talks about a place full of pretty people, where everyone is in love and flowers pick themselves. The company is, however, based in London, which falls short of this description in at least a couple of ways. Possibly more. Especially when you’re on the Tube. Nasty business.

The company’s first short film, Alleyman, won the British Lion Award for Achievement at the British Independent Film Awards, 2011, and received an honourable mention at the 2011 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. Other shorts, Darkest Before Dawn, Lonesome at the Cannes Short Film Corner in 2011 and 2012, as did The Tyrant’s Cup and Child, which are currently doing the rounds on the festival circuit. Keen City has a number of new projects in various stages of production, including comedy shows Ted Burns: Third Degree and Keen City’s Private Dick, as well as feature projects The Cult, Survivor, and Sex, Drugs, Some Rocks and a Few Rolls. Stay tuned.

Collaborative Series Launches This Month to Save Animals from Euthanasia

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) December 14, 2012

This series is devoted to saving animals through adoption, volunteering and donating to animal-related causes.  It is committed to raising awareness of many different animal rescues in Arizona and beyond.  TheAnimalRescuers.net will spotlight a different rescue group each week, along with health-oriented and training segments on each show.

“We know many people are interested in saving animals and are unaware of the extreme number of animals that are in need of adoption.”  These are not animals that are sick, old, or have temperament problems that would make them unfit companions – these are healthy, happy, and well adjusted animals that, through no fault of their own, nobody wants. “Now, there is way to help.  The Animal Rescuers will be a resource to effectively educate people about these dire circumstances that many animals face.”  states Cory Mandall, founder of The Animal Rescuers.

In this economy, families have had to make the heartbreaking and difficult decision to give up their animals. The intake at rescue groups is at an alarming rate and growing worse.  Shelters are overwhelmed and many healthy animals are being euthanize due to overcrowding. Meanwhile, puppy mills, store and backyard breeders continue to sell animals at rates that create a disproportionate amount of animals in our society.  The Humane Society of the United States estimates that four million cats and dogs – about one every 8 seconds –  are put down in US shelters every year.  Our goal is to save the lives of animals in need of adoption through educating the public of these challenges.

Realizing the full power of education, Pet Planet has partnered with The Animal Rescuers to support this program and it’s outreach efforts:

Laura Leah English, Co-Founder and CEO of Pet Planet states, “Pet Planet’s vision is a global society where all pets are loved, respected, protected and kept in good health; a society without pet overpopulation, homelessness or abuse. The pet overpopulation problem around the globe is staggering. We can do so much better. Pet Planet is committed to educating and supporting programs that advocate for pet health and welfare issues and we are so excited to be involved with Cory Mandall and the Animal Rescuers show - a show that we believe will dramatically make a difference for animals everywhere.

Animal homelessness is a societal problem, but anyone can make a difference. By just learning, acknowledging, understanding and sharing the messages that will be portrayed in this new weekly series, the movement will garner the momentum it needs to impact change. The work that countless rescue groups and their volunteers do each and every day is admirable. But they cannot do it alone and the intention of The Animal Rescuers is to illustrate the difference that an individual can really make by rescuing animals for their families, encouraging others to do the same, always spaying and neutering, fostering or volunteering with local rescue groups and donating to further support the cause. And most importantly, by spreading the word.

Pet Planet is very proud to be working with Cory, PACC911 and all the rescue groups that will be involved in this innovative and ground-breaking venture. It warms our hearts to see such a committed group of people tirelessly working to improve the lives of animals everywhere.”

The premiere show will air on Friday, December 14th, featuring PACC911 and their amazing founder, Bari Mears. ”What I have learned over the years is that despite our continued efforts to educate the public about animal issues, particularly pet overpopulation and the great need to spay and neuter, our cries have not been heard.  It is my hope that this new weekly show will attract the attention of not only rescue minded people but also new viewers not currently involved in the movement. My hope is that they learn the issues, realize the seriousness of the plight of homeless animals, and join the rescue effort in some small way. The show should catch on and make RESCUE and Adoption something “cool” and very socially acceptable.. thus taking the movement to new levels and saving countless more lives.”

Additionally, it will feature Rescued Treasures with manager Dee Umpleby, a thrift store operated by PACC911 to raise money for their emergency medical fund. We also visit the 5th Annual Kimburs Pet Wash event in Surprise and the Maricopa County Animal Care & Control facility in South Phoenix. Our training segment features Villa La Paws with pet tips from Pet Planet.

On December 21st, The Animal Rescuers will showcase HALO rescue and their driven founder, Heather Allen. It will also include a segment devoted to pet loss with Dan Crenshaw, who has a book titled, Furry Farewell Grief Handbook. Charity events from Valley Rescue Dogs and a wine tasting to raise money for New Hope Cattle Dogs. Lastly, we will feature a very loveable dog from New Hope Cattle Dog Rescue.

Please note: There will be no show on the 29th of December, but will return with a on January 4th and the feature with Golden Connections and their incredible founder, Candy.

About The Animal Rescuers

Cory Mandall stated his career in television production in 1988 as a part-time camera operator. He moved to Phoenix in 1992 and started a boutique television production shop in November of 1998.  In 2008, he produced the first in a series of videos for animal rescue groups.  He found his passion for saving animals, using his production capabilities to make an impact on viewers.  The idea of The Animal Rescuers came as Cory wanted to do more for the rescue community.  With this new web-based program, he has the opportunity to incorporate his two greatest passions – animal rescue and video production.

About PACC911

Filling a vital community need, PACC 911 brings together over 120 animal welfare organizations throughout Arizona, most within Maricopa County.  PACC911 provides opportunities for its partners to work together for the benefit of animals in five distinct ways: large adopt-a-thons, medical assistance, fundraising, education and a food bank.

Musicians, Educators, and 600,000 Students Band Together for Music Education in Australian Schools; Monster Music Reacts

Monster Music

Australia (PRWEB) December 12, 2012

Music: Count Us In 2012, in which 600,000 students in schools across Australia sang the same song at the same time in November, was seen as a huge success, according to an article from The Age. Professional singer, songwriter, and musician Josh Pyke mentored three high school students, Sun Woo Kim, Ryan Chelva, and Jorja Bromley, and collaborated with them on the song, called “Different People (Stand Together).”

The three students were chosen because, after considering 80 songs for the event, judges decided that three songs were worthy, and decided to give all three young songwriters a chance to be mentored in a workshop with a professional, where they wrote the song from scratch.

Music: Count Us In, whose mission is to raise support and awareness for music education in schools across Australia, has been in existence since 2007. It is run by the Music Council of Australia, with support from ex-Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett, currently the Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth. Other high-profile supporters this year were “The Voice” contestants Prinnie Stevens and Mahalia Barnes.

According to the same The Age article, Richard Letts, who is currently the Music Council of Australia’s Executive Director, was happy with the participation in the event, but is not happy with the current state of music education in Australian schools. According to Letts, up to 80% of primary schools in NSW do not have any music education in their classrooms. Letts points out that in a four year teaching degree curriculum, future teachers only receive 17 hours of music education.

Letts also points out that the economic status of schools plays a factor in whether or not they have music education, with the more-affluent schools receiving music education, while less-affluent schools don’t. Letts also references literacy studies in which musical classes were proven to be more effective at producing literacy than literacy classes are.

In a recent post on his blog, Danny Achurch, Owner and Proprietor of Monster Music, writes that “Australian schools are coming up woefully short in music education.”

Achurch is concerned about the state of music education in Australian schools: “It is fairly well-documented that the 80% figure of schools that don’t offer music education quoted by Richard Letts is accurate, not only in NSW, but all across Australia. There are so many benefits to a music education, intellectually and socially, that not having music constitutes neglect on the part of the Australian educational system.”

Achurch continued, “Music helps kids learn. It helps kids relate to one another. It helps kids with self-esteem issues. All of these benefits are totally outside the scope of what most educators consider when they make decisions concerning music education, and they are being taken away from our children because most educators have no idea of the benefits provided by music education.”

Achurch contributes what he can through Monster Music: “We would love to see the system change, and see more music taught in Australian schools, but we don’t see it happening in the near future. We respect and admire those who are trying to change that system, but it does no good to students who are currently being deprived of the far-reaching benefits of music education.”

Achurch’s solution: private music lessons. “The only effective way to ensure that students get a musical education is to get them private lessons outside of the school system.”

Monster Music offers guitar, voice, piano, bass guitar, drum, violin, and general music lessons in Melbourne, Perth and across Australia.

Visit their website here for more information: http://www.monstermusic.com.au/ or call them at 08 9335 8881.

Colordarcy Reveals 7 Reasons Why Istanbul Will Be The Best Place To Invest In 2013

(PRWEB UK) 10 December 2012

Loxley McKenzie, Managing Director of Colordarcy commented, “There was a time when I could have held up several as candidates for the hottest property markets, however with Europe still in economic decline and Asian property prices slowing down, those choices are limited to just a few outposts where property prices are still rising.

One of these countries is Turkey and there are seven reasons why I expect it’s fastest growing city, Istanbul, to continue growing in 2013, even as property prices in most of the rest of Europe are likely to fall further.”

Colordarcy suggest the following seven reasons why property investors should be looking at Istanbul as the best place to invest in 2013.

1. Turkey has risen to third place in the world’s hottest property markets

According to Knight Frank’s latest global house price index, Turkey’s property prices increased on average 11.5% between Q3 2011 and Q3 2012. This is phenomenal considering that one of Turkey’s near neighbours, Greece, has been grappling with their own version of a Great Depression.

Nowhere else in Europe have property prices risen this fast this quickly and it is likely that further increases in the value of property in Istanbul will be seen as more investment money pours into the city.

2. Stable economy and a better credit rating

Turkey’s economic situation is far more stable than it used to be say country analysts at Colordarcy. Back in November 2012, Fitch finally lifted Turkey’s long term currency debt to BBB- from BB+ (Source: Reuters)

Ratings agencies are notorious for taking a ‘glass half full’ view of most countries at the moment, so it is a very positive sign for next year that Turkey has actually been upgraded.

3. Pent up demand

Turkey’s economy and property markets have grown so rapidly, it is easy to forget that the country is still emerging. What makes Istanbul so attractive is huge demand for property according to Colordarcy analysts.

At the very basic level, the price of property in Turkey is rising because demand is so high. 600,000 housing units a year are needed to cater for rapid population growth. (Source: Turkstat)

4. Lifting of reciprocity restrictions

The lifting of the reciprocity law in Turkey in May 2012 attracted global attention. Even before Turkey decided to lift its restrictions on foreign property investors, $ 1.1 billion worth of property had already been purchased, which was four times the amount in 2011.

5. Increased interest from Middle East investors

Turkey has been on a major charm offensive aimed at attracting investment from its Arab neighbours. The Middle East currently accounts for just 10 per cent of foreign direct investment in Turkey (Source: Turkstat) and there is a good chance that this will now rise considerably.

Back in October, the FT reported that one construction group developing a site in Istanbul had received $ 400m from Gulf investors before it was even launched.

6. Prices remain low in comparison to most Western European countries – even in Istanbul

The price per square metre of property in Istanbul has risen from £1,244 to £2,800 in 7 years, yet the average price per square metre of Turkey as a whole still has a long way to catch up with Spain, The Netherlands and the Czech Republic.

Istanbul still ranks a lowly 29th among the world’s most expensive cities to buy property. (Source: Global Property Guide).

7. Turkey has performed well even as the rest of Europe remained flat or in decline in 2013

Knight Frank’s latest report on European property makes for grim reading. Austerity measures being taken in most countries to pay off debt are clearly having a negative affect on property prices. The index rose just 1 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of 2012.

The 12 countries at the bottom of the list are all from Europe, and the fact that Turkey has weathered this year’s storm well and hints at more of the same to come in 2013 as the situation in Europe hopefully improves.

Getting a new vital cash injection from the EU for debt-choked Greece is far from a done deal. Leaders of the coalition government have failed to agree on stinging cuts worth roughly 12 billion euros – that the Prime Minister insists are crucial to avoid bankruptcy. But his allies in the government objected to across-the-board cuts on wages and pensions and also criticised plans to trim disability benefits. At the same time, Greece’s foreign lenders, who are currently in the country to assess its progress on meeting the bailout terms, also rejected parts of the austerity measures, with talks set to continue. But the fiercest opposition the cuts have evoked come from the Greeks themselves – as Peter Oliver reports.
